THE Torquay Bridge Club not only provides a social outing for all members but also helps keep players’ minds sharp.

Group convenor Geoff Warren said the club had experienced a resurgence during the pandemic, with the people aged 50 and over joining the club for the community and skill.

“The club has 85 members and the numbers continue to grow exponentially,” Warren said.

“The club is really thriving and the friendliness of Torquay has made it a really great place for members to be.

“We recently had a letter from an elderly gentlemen saying how it’s been a revelation being a part of the group.

“He said it’s something he looks forward to every couple of days and saved him from what he explained was waiting around to pass away.”

The Torquay Bridge Club is held in the Torquay Uniting Church on Mondays and Wednesdays from 12-4pm, while lessons are on Fridays from 2-4pm.

The club is up to date with other organisations around the country, and has bidding boxes and computerised versions of bridge as well.

“While we have a mixed group, we are looking at the 50–90-year-old age group and those that can’t surf or do something of that nature any more,” Mr Warren said.

“Bridge is challenging and it keeps people very intellectually active.

“Those that have played games like solo or euchre would be off to a very good start, but lessons are available for those that haven’t played before.”

Club joining fees are $40 a year, while table fees are $5 for members and affiliates and $6 for visitors for face-to-face play.
