TORQUAY College has recently been awarded four stars for their involvement in Sustainability Victoria’s ResourceSmart Schools Program.

ResourceSmart Schools is an award-winning state government program that assists schools to embed sustainability in everything they do, encourages real-life sustainability learning and helps schools save money.

Torquay College have been involved with the ResourceSmart Schools for a number of years and have used the program to build on their existing kitchen garden program and environment centre.

Freshwater Creek business The Farmer’s Place is the delivery partner for ResourceSmart Schools for the Barwon South West region, and facilitators who have worked with Torquay College over the years said they were incredibly proud, and recognised the enormous effort and dedication required by staff, parents and students who chose to take on the challenge and take action.

Of the 2,500 schools in Victoria, about 1,000 of them are participating in the ResourceSmart program, which helps schools to minimise waste, save energy and water, promote biodiversity and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The program is growing in popularity among the Surf Coast’s schools – last year, St Therese Catholic Primary School was recertified as a five-star ResourceSmart School, making it one of only 24 schools to have achieved the highest rating.
