THE Torquay Cowrie Market is back this weekend, bringing together more than 150 makers, artists and food stalls for one of the region’s most popular community events.

The market, which specialises in local art, craft, jewellery and vintage goods, will take place on Sunday (September 21) along Torquay’s Elephant Walk between 9am and 2pm.

It marks the first of eight markets scheduled for the 2025-26 season, each falling on the third Sunday of the month until April.

Market coordinator Tania Bartlett said the market was returning to its roots this season with a stronger focus on the Surf Coast’s creative community.

“We spend a lot of time curating the market to make sure we get a good mixture of products,” she said. “But our real focus this year is on creators and makers and artists from this area.”

The 2025-26 season of the Torquay Cowrie Market will bring together more than 150 makers, artists and food stalls.

All items for sale will be environmentally friendly, handmade, homegrown or designed by the stallholder, and visitors can again expect a line-up of local musicians and entertainers to round out the event.

“There’ll be awesome variety, a lot of your favourite old stallholders, but a lot of new ones as well,” Ms Bartlett said.

“Come and support local.”

The Torquay Cowrie Market is an initiative of Surf Coast Arts, which this year celebrated its 30th anniversary.

The market aims to be a single-use plastic free event. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own reusable cups, bottles and bags.
