TORQUAY commuters and bus users face significant disruptions from Monday as the intersection of Fischer Street and Centreside Drive closes for roadworks.

The closure will remain in place for the duration of the works, forcing a temporary bus detour and the relocation of two stops.

Bus stops on Merrijig Drive near Yallock Circuit, and Fischer Street near Shorebreak Street, will be closed. Passengers will be diverted to temporary stops on Scott Avenue near Centreside Drive and on Fischer Street near Nautical Rise.

To accommodate the detour, temporary ‘no standing’ zones will be enforced along the new bus route.

While the intersection will be closed to through traffic, the Surf Coast Shire confirmed local residents will maintain access to their properties throughout the construction period.

The works mark the final phase of a safety project designed to protect pedestrians and cyclists.

The upgrades include four new raised pedestrian crossings at the Centreside Drive roundabout, the conversion of a speed hump on Merrijig Drive into a crossing, and the installation of bike lanes on both sides of Fischer Street.

Cr Liz Pattison said the project followed a 2023 TAC-funded analysis to identify safety improvements along the busy corridor.

“Families and commuters use this road regularly, and these upgrades will create a safer environment for everyone,” she said.

The works are expected to be finished by the end of June.
