A TORQUAY local has helped improve cancer diagnosis, treatment and prevention in Australia by raising $5,525 during a five-day outback rally driving event.

Earlier this month, Torquay’s Jon Morrow and close friend Isaac Johnstone fired up their 1997 Holden VS Commodore to participate in the 2023 Cancer Council Mystery Box Rally.

More than 100 teams across the country took part in the 2,500km drive, which journeyed through rural and outback Queensland to raise vital funds and awareness for Cancer Council.

The drive kicked off and concluded in Bundaberg, Queensland, however teams had no idea what route they were taking each day until the morning of the mission.

Mr Morrow said it was a wonderful to play a small part in helping Cancer Council raise over $1 million at the event.

“It’s very significant they raised over $1 million this year, further adding to the more than $4.5 million raised since the Mystery Rally’s inception.

“It was a great experience going through outback Queensland in the car and to see the scenic and offroad areas.

“We had campfires at night, met local characters at the bush pubs and enjoyed spending time with many new people.

“It was certainly interesting not knowing where we were going each day, particularly without the internet and just by following road signs and a compass.

“But it was an awesome adventure, and the fact it was for a good cause made it even sweeter.”

Mr Morrow said there were many people to thank for allowing him and Mr Johnstone to experience the joys of the outback adventure.

“People have been very generous, particularly the Torquay Angling Club and Torquay Tyrepower teams who were our major sponsors.

“We got an incredible reception and following from the car, it all came together fantastic for us.

“It looks like we might have another go in 2024 and we hope to go bigger and better to push money towards the Cancer Council.”
