MEAGAN Mifsud was awarded with RACV Torquay’s outstanding community award the weekend before last, with the Torquay Netball Club president enjoying a night’s accommodation at the resort before attending the Geelong v Sydney clash at GMHBA Stadium on Saturday June 1.

Nominated by committee member Sharon Lanyon – who described Meagan as a “positive and enthusiastic personality” – Meagan said she was flattered to even be nominated.

“We had an amazing weekend; it was very special. Initially I was a bit embarrassed because it’s not the reason why you do what you do, but it is nice to know people are grateful for your involvement in the community,” Meagan said.

“Sharon’s been on the committee for about seven or eight years out of the 12 years I’ve been around. She’s done a lot herself. As soon as I hung up from the RACV, I got on the phone to her straight away. I was very chuffed.”

Devoting many volunteer hours to the club, Meagan said she’s played netball since she was 10. Her love for the game has never wavered.

On top of her presidency responsibilities, Meagan organises the TNC committee, works in conjunction with the club’s coaches, attends meetings in both Geelong and Torquay, provides administration on game days and coordinates and liaises with club sponsors.

Meagan says while it’s challenging spending time away from her husband, Glen, and their two children, Emma, 21, and Nathan, 18, the connections she’s made through her active involvement in the club have been incredibly rewarding.

“I’ve made so many lifelong friends at the club, having coached, played and been on the committee,” she said.

“Some of the youngest kids I’ve ever coached are now driving cars – it’s absolutely the rewarding part. We just do our bit to keep the kids off the street and provide a safe haven for them where they can play and enjoy.

“As president you’ve also got to take the hits – it’s a lot of pressure, but the social part I do really enjoy. You’re always meeting with people, pulling together people’s strengths and weaknesses and seeing people get involved.”
