Book fair’s new chapter proves a hit

January 28, 2021 BY

Numbers were limited inside the Torquay Rotary Book Fair this year.

BOOK lovers turned up in force to the newly-relocated Torquay Rotary Book Fair, which was held over the Australia Day weekend.

The annual event, usually held in the Torquay Scout Hall in Spring Creek Recreation Reserve, moved to a vacant shop in the Torquay Village shopping centre so it could keep running under social distancing requirements.

Paul Moran from the Torquay Rotary Club said people turned out in droves from Saturday to Tuesday, with queues waiting patiently and numbers limited indoors at any one time due to COVIDSafe protocols.

“The new space has been a blessing as it’s been able to accommodate more people this year, as well as the air conditioning assisting with the warm conditions experienced this weekend.

“Torquay Rotary has been really pleased with the support shown from the local community as well as from some of the many visitors we’ve had in Torquay.

“This year, the book fair has been bigger and better than ever.”

A queue of people waited patiently outside for
their turn.

Mr Moran said book sales had been encouraging, with the volunteers needing to work hard to constantly replenish stock throughout the day.

“There really is a great range of books this year, including plenty for the kids, so it was a great opportunity for people to pick up a bargain with the vast majority of books selling for just $1 each.

“All in all, it has been a great fundraiser for Torquay Rotary and we wish to thank the community for the ongoing support of important Rotary projects.”
