Torquay Surf Life Saving Club (TSLSC) is set for a redevelopment to modernise the facility.

TSLSC president Tiffany Quinlan admits the facility is no longer fit for purpose, citing the first aid room, patrolling facilities, storage, a need for disability access and general wear and tear as areas the club is eager to improve.

The club received a grant which was a pre-election promise from former Corangamite Liberal federal member Sarah Henderson, allowing TSLSC to get started on some works, but Ms Quinlan stressed there was still a need for more financial support.

She said the club was lobbying to receive more funding in the next election cycle and begin works in March 2021, with the decision still to be made as to whether TSLSC redevelops the existing building or starts from scratch.

“It’s been on the agenda for the club for some time, but now it’s getting to a point where it’s no longer fit for purpose.

“We’re really trying to create a design that will see us through for the next 30 to 40 years.

“We anticipate our beach is just going to get busier and busier, so as a result of all that we’re desperately trying to make sure that we can fulfil our primary duty of life saving.”

One of the major goals for TSLSC was to become self-sustainable. Ms Quinlan said the club was looking at providing schools, community groups and any interested parties the opportunity to rent out the facility or use accommodation within, which will help bring in revenue.

“We want to create a space not just for members, but for the broader community, to have access to what is the best view on the coast.

“I really would like to stress that it’s going to be a community space, it’s for everybody, and we’d really love the community to get behind us.

“Every cent we can gain gives us an opportunity to create a facility that is fit for purpose and ensures that everybody that goes to the beach comes home safe.”
