Torquay SLSC has strong start to summer
TORQUAY Surf Life Saving Club has declared a strong start to the 2023-24 lifesaving season, citing large attendance numbers and introducing new programs.
Torquay SLSC president Julian Sweeney said the club had enjoyed amazing results this season, with the season’s conclusion still three months away.
“The Torquay SLSC Nipper Summer Holiday Program has been an astounding success this year.
“We’ve had more than 2,660 Nippers attending over the eight sessions and we’ve had an average of more than 330 Nippers participating every day.”
Torquay SLSC signed off 30 new Bronze Medallion holders and SRC (Surf Rescue Certificate) holders.
The club trained and assessed all participants ensuring the next generation of Life Savers were adequately certified for future years.
“We also successfully integrated Starfish Nippers into our regular Nippers program, giving our Starfish Nipper families some life-long memories that they will cherish when thinking of their time in Torquay,” Mr Sweeney added.
“It also cements the foundations that we’re building around inclusiveness and making the Surf Club more approachable for everybody.”
Torquay SLSC has hosted two bumper competitions so far, starting with its Cosy Corner Carnival on January 5.
The club confirmed 153 enthusiastic Nippers represented the club, taking out first place overall.
The club’s host competition weekend culminated two days later at the Jim Wall Classic.
This year’s Jim Wall event broke its all-time attendance record with more than 250 competitors competing in the world’s longest-running iron event.
Athletes from all over Australia competed for the coveted Jim Wall Iron Classic Trophy, but two homegrown talents came away with the historic silverware.
“It was a true highlight of this season to see the victories of Torquay SLSC raised Grace Harris and Archie Vernon in the Jim Wall Classic,” Mr Sweeney said.
“The entire club was excited to see both Grace and Archie standing on the winners’ dais together, as both athletes represent what is possible with dedication and hard work.
“As role models for what “graduates” from Torquay SLSC are capable of, it was a pleasure to see the reaction from our junior members who have now become inspired to compete and represent Torquay on the national stage.”
Blackman’s Garden Bar, with meals courtesy of Feed Me Surf Coast, will continue to operate in the evening all summer long, and the community is encouraged to visit. Torquay SLSC will also soon wrap up consultation on its proposed redevelopment, with feedback closing on Wednesday, January 31.
“The consultation process has received almost 200 submissions and the community’s response has been overwhelmingly positive,” Mr Sweeney said.
“The Torquay community has recognised the shortcomings of the existing facility and are supportive of the new facility and its proposed offerings to enhance the enjoyment and safety of Torquay Surf Beach.”
