TORQUAY Surf Life Saving Club’s Starfish Nippers program is returning this summer to provide people of all abilities a chance to learn beach safety adn awareness skills.

The Starfish Nippers program, which was launched in 2019, runs alongside Torquay’s summer Nipper program and offers people with disability the opportunity to enjoy the ocean in a safe and comfortable setting.

Torquay SLSC Club President Julian Sweeney said the program had been popular since its inception and hopes the program’s gradual climb in participation continues.

The Starfish Nippers program teaches students beach safety and awareness skills.

“We believe kids of all-abilities should have the chance to do Nippers and the Starfish program is exactly that, we are all equal and everyone should be able to enjoy nature’s beauty,” Sweeney said.

“The program gives students a great chance to socialise, have fun and enjoy the beach with their friends and family.

“We see the program as a natural progression to a child’s life and everyone should get that chance to partake.

“There are 600 kids doing Nippers this summer season including the Starfish Nippers which is just unreal.”

The program features modified beach and water activities including games, running, beach flags, wading, swimming, boards and special activities with the club’s Age Group manager Nippers.

“The program has a profound and positive impact on everyone who gets involved,” Sweeney said.

“The benefits flow not only on our Starfish Nippers and their families but to our volunteers, trainers, age group Nippers and the club overall.

“We can’t wait to see everyone on the beach in a few weeks time.”

Starfish Nippers runs daily from Wednesday, December 28, 2022 to Saturday, January 07, 2023, excluding New Year’s Day.
