THE Surf Coast sporting community is the big winner from the latest round of the federal government’s Building Better Regions Fund, with two Torquay projects to share in nearly five-and-a-half million dollars in grants.

Corangamite federal member Sarah Henderson visited Banyul-Warri Fields in Torquay North this afternoon to announce a $5 million grant for three multi-purpose indoor courts (next to the existing stadium) and a $360,000 grant for a third soccer pitch in the precinct.

Both projects are expected to begin construction within this financial year, most likely by early 2019.

Tenant sports clubs in Torquay North were delighted to hear the news.

“This means the funds are now there to build a complex capable of not only catering to our growing community but also equipped to attract regional events,” Surfcoast Basketball Association president Nicole Crammond said.

“This is a massive plus for the wider community.”
