The stadium will be formed by adding three courts to the existing single indoor court at Surf Coast Secondary College.

THE Surf Coast Multi-Purpose Indoor Stadium is moving closer to construction, with people now able to view images of what it will look like.

The Surf Coast Shire says it is “undertaking all necessary steps” to prepare for the new stadium, which will be built in Torquay North.

It will be formed by adding three courts to the existing single-court stadium at Surf Coast Secondary College and is planned to be complete by the end of 2020.

The council has been working with Surf Coast Secondary College and potential user groups of the stadium throughout the design process. A planning permit application has also been prepared and will be publicly advertised soon.

Shire mayor Rose Hodge said she was excited to see the stadium project progressing.

“As a Council, our goal is to support people to be healthy and active and this new community facility will help us achieve that, offering a space for fitness, sport and a sense of community.

“It can also be used for various other activities including school and community events.

“We want to maximise the use of the stadium. We have been working with user groups to tick off that goal and ensure it’s a valued place for the Surf Coast community.”

The $13.5 million project is made up of a council contribution of $2.6 million, developer contributions of $2.9 million, and $8 million in grants from the state and federal governments via the Better Indoor Stadiums Fund and the Building Better Regions Fund respectively.

The council resolved in December 2017 to transfer an estimated 3,176 sqm of council-owned land to the Victorian Department of Education and Training to create a single land title.

“This will ensure we can make the best use of council land and school land,” Cr Hodge said.
