FOUNDATION students at Torquay College achieved the first of many milestones to come in their education journeys, celebrating the first 100 days of school last Wednesday.

The day’s theme was aptly named “100”, meaning anything related to the number itself could be the inspiration for how the students dressed.

Some kids decided to dress like someone who they believed to be 100 years old, using props such as walking sticks and reading glasses.

Others decided to take a simpler tact and wore clothing that simply had the number ‘100’ on it.

The kids participated in games and activities, which was then followed by hot chips provided by their teachers to round out the festivities.

The first 100 school days for any student are some of the most formative according to vice principal Victoria Long.

She could not be happier with how the kids have handled their initial stages of school life during these turbulent times.

“We have been proud of our students and the resilience they have shown to continue their learning at home,” Ms Long said.

“We miss the in-person connection, but we are fortunate that our students have been proactive to adapt to the online learning.

“The families at Torquay College have shown wonderful support and appreciation through these times for students and teachers.

“It was a great day of celebrating.”

The students have learned many new skills in their first 100 days.

These include learning sounds to help them read and write, basic maths skills such aw adding and subtracting, learning about each student’s families, and making new friends.

The students have also been learning about animals at the school’s Environmental Centre, which prepared them for their recent trip to Melbourne Zoo, which was a big highlight.

The Prep Music Performance and Immersion Days were among other highlights for kids during their first 100 days.

“We encourage the development of friendships and focus on the child as a whole, to develop social, emotional and academic skills,” Ms Long said.

“We always encourage and look for opportunities to practice our school values of Doing your Best, Friendship and Respect.”
