Torquay surfer headlines finalists for national awards
A TORQUAY local is among some of the biggest names in surfing to be revealed as finalists for the 2024 Australian Surfing Awards.
Surfing Victoria’s Indigenous Aquatics Manager Jordie Campbell is one of four finalists for the Indigenous Surfing – Community Celebration Award.
The Australian Surfing Awards honour the outstanding achievements of Australia’s top surfers and celebrate those contributing behind the scenes in areas such as event organisation, business, media, photography, and more.
This year’s gala night will take place tonight (Saturday, December 7) at the Home of the Arts, on the Gold Coast, Queensland.
Jordie Campbell has been co-leading the Victorian Indigenous Surfing Program at Surfing Victoria since 2015 and also a past participant.
The program is one of the longest running Indigenous engagements programs in the country and connects Indigenous Victorians with the ocean whilst learning new skills, water safety and healthy habits.
Campbell has spearheaded its expansion in both coastal and rural areas, growing its participation rates to more than 700 participants annually.
Former Surfing Victoria chief executive officer Max Wells is also up for a top honour on the night and is nominated for the Peter Troy Lifetime Achievement Award.
Locally born surf brand Rip Curl is nominated for the Sustainability Award.
