THE globally famous series of TEDx Talks comes to Torquay next week with an event focused on the power of women and girls to be creators and change-makers.

TEDxBellsBeachWomen will present a full day of live and virtual speakers, discussions and workshops, structured around the idea that the COVID-enforced remaginations of the past two years now present an opportunity to shift the existing paradigms around work, rights, climate and family.

Freeceo founder and Torquay local Annelise Worn is organising and hosting the day, and said TEDxBellsBeachWomen was about bringing local women together.

Vimeo chief executive officer Anjali Sud and veteran journalist and publisher Stephanie Mehta will talk on the subject of work.

“I started meeting some of them at different women’s business events, and learning about the incredible things that they were doing, and just hearing that people wanted to come together; people wanted that connection now that we can have it.”

She said the paradigms people had previously lived with were changing.

“Sometimes we get stuck and we forget to question that; we don’t realise that everything’s up for question and we can redesign everything.

“You don’t have to work 9 to 5 – I’m working from Airlie Beach right now, we’re on a three-week roadtrip and I’m working along the way, I’m working at nights so I can spend time with my family – so I think we forget that we can throw the Monopoly board up in the air and let all the pieces redesign it.

“I think it should all come from joy and redefining what success looks like, and then restructuring work and what motherhood looks like, and getting really creative around how we design our lives, because we get to choose.

“We live in this beautiful time – especially those of us living on the Surf Coast, we are super-super-blessed – that we get to choose what that looks like.”

Themes adressed throughout the day include:

  • Joy, with global activist Angélique Kidjo and international journalist Femi Oke
  • Success, with retired head coach of the UCLA women’s gymnastics team Valorie Kondos Field
  • Work, with Vimeo chief executive officer Anjali Sud and veteran journalist and publisher Stephanie Mehta
  • Motherhood, with Alexandra Sacks, the leading clinical expert on matrescence
  • Creativity, with Amy Tan, author of The Joy Luck Club, The Kitchen God’s Wife and The Hundred Secret Senses, and
  • Rights, with Rise Up founder Vanessa Nakate and Ireland’s first female president Mary Robinson.

TEDxBellsBeachWomen will be held at RACV Torquay Resort on Monday, November 7 from 9am-5pm.

Tickets are limited to 100 and seating is unallocated.
