Torquay Tornadoes debut in Stand Out Cup
THE Torquay Tornadoes Hockey Club made their debut at this year’s Stand out Cup, entering both junior and senior teams in the competition.
The Cup, held in Footscray, is a social competition, standing out against homophobia and transphobia, while celebrating inclusion and diversity within hockey clubs.
The tournament is run by Hockey Australia with the event aiming to promote positive language, attitudes and policies, ensuring that everybody feels valued and respected in the game.
Torquay Tornadoes member Allesha Fecondo said the club’s participation in last month’s tournament not only showcased their talent but also reinforced the importance of diversity and acceptance within the sporting community.
“The Stand Out Cup Tournament holds special significance as it champions Hockey Victoria’s mission to foster an inclusive environment for the LGBTIQ+ community.
“Among the highlights of the day was the recognition of Luka from the Torquay Tornadoes Junior squad, who clinched the title of Best Dressed Junior.”
This year, more than 50 teams participate in the Cup – the highest number yet – in what was described as a supportive and fun atmosphere with a vibrant energy.
It was the first time the event has welcomed juniors into the competition, with eight teams entering.
“Both the junior and senior teams from Torquay Tornadoes embraced the spirit of the tournament with enthusiasm, blending new talents with seasoned players,” Ms Fecondo said.
Funding was provided by the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing, allowing the tournament to remove the entry cost for junior teams.
The Torquay Tornadoes say they remain committed to fostering a welcoming environment where all players can thrive and excel in the game.
