Torquay’s veterinary clinic gets a vibrant makeover with a new mural
TORQUAY and Surf Coast Veterinary Clinics have unveiled a fresh look with a mural inspired by the Surf Coast and surrounding landscape.
Over the past 13 years, Dr Kate Gittings has nurtured the clinic’s growth, culminating in a recent refurbishment.
Opting for a community-centric approach, Dr Gittings commissioned local artist Leighton Edwards to create a mural instead of installing a traditional billboard on the side of the premises.
“I knew Leighton was the man for the job,” Dr Gittings said.
Edwards, a Torquay resident for about 17 years, embraced the challenge of translating his oil painting expertise to a grander canvas.
“This project is quite similar to my usual work, just on a much larger scale,” he said.
The mural, Edwards’ largest project to date, aims to evoke the essence of the Surf Coast while encouraging viewers to relax and slow down.
Edwards’ artwork captures a scenic view of Torquay, with depictions of Dr Gittings, a labrador, Fishos Beach, and the Barwon Heads Bluff, celebrating the bond between pets and their owners.
“The main challenge was getting the colour mix and quantities just right,” Edwards said, noting the use of scissor lifts and scaffolding to complete the mural.
“It really captures the spirit of the local community and clients,” Dr Gittings said.
“The human-animal bond is really special,” she added, highlighting the mural’s reflection of Torquay’s pet-loving community.
The clinic is located at 29 Surf Coast Highway, Torquay.
