Seven hurt in plane crash

UPDATE: SEVEN people have been taken to hospital after a plane crash in Connewarre.

The plane – believed to be a skydiving flight – was carrying 17 people on board when it took off from Barwon Heads Airport at about 7.50am today (Friday, October 20).

In a statement, a Victoria Police spokesperson said it was understood that the plane “got into difficulty before making an emergency landing nearby in Connewarre” shortly afterwards.

Emergency services were called to the scene 10 minutes after takeoff, at 8am, and paramedics have treated and taken seven people to hospital.

According to an Ambulance Victoria staterment, a man in his 30s was flown to The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne in a stable condition with upper body injuries, while three other people were taken to hospital by road ambulance to Geelong, all in a stable condition with serious injuries.

Three other patients have been taken to hospital for further medical assessment.

Paramedics assessed 10 other people from the aircraft at the scene, but they did not require emergency treatment or transport.

The South Barwon SES unit also attended the crash, with volunteers assisting paramedics with transporting patients over the uneven terrain at the crash site.

A Victoria Police spokesperson said police were attending the scene of “an aircraft incident” at an airfield, believed to be the Barwon Heads Airport.

“It’s believed two people may have suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

“We will provide more information when we are in a position to do so.”
