THE Victorian Mixed Ultimate Championships are set to fly into Torquay next month, bringing the premier Ultimate Frisbee players from Victoria and Tasmania to the Surf Coast.

An expected 300 players from 16 clubs across Victoria and Tasmania will participate in the tournament on September 3 and 4 at Banyul-Waari Fields and Quay Reserve in Torquay, with the mixed gender championships serving as the major qualifying event for the national event which is to be held in October in Shepparton.

Ultimate Frisbee is known as a non-contact team sport played with a frisbee, combining elements of netball, touch football, and grid-iron into a fast paced, athletic sport.

It is said to provide a unique offering, due to the sport being self-refereed – due to the ‘Spirit of the Game’, where players are responsible for adhering to and overseeing the rules themselves.

The game is played in more than 100 countries worldwide, is a sport at the World Games, and has a strong presence in universities and high schools.

Simon Talbot from Ultimate Victoria, state sport association for Ultimate Frisbee, said Ultimate Victoria was excited to bring the event to the Surf Coast for the first time in 2022.

“With a focus on developing the sport throughout the state of Victoria, we believe that this event will go a long way to towards building the culture and awareness of Ultimate Frisbee within the Surf Coast,” Talbot said.

‘We encourage everyone to come along throughout the weekend to the Banyul-Warri Fields to view what Ultimate Frisbee has to offer as a sporting opportunity and the amazing culture it has.

“We would like to thank the Surf Coast Events for their tremendous support with hosting the event in Torquay and look forward to a fantastic display of Ultimate Frisbee over the weekend.”

The Victorian Mixed Ultimate Championships will be open to teams of all ability and experience levels.

Games will be on the run on Saturday and Sunday between 9am and 4pm, with the grand final of the tournament set for 2.30pm on the Sunday.
