Up to 25 new scholarships available at Deakin
DEAKIN University has established a new accommodation scholarship for students affected by Australia’s bushfires, with housing available at Geelong’s Waterfront and Waurn Ponds campuses.
Up to 25 Bushfire Relief Residential Scholarships – each worth about $12,000 – are now available and will fund the yearly cost of student accommodation.
Deakin vice-chancellor Professor Iain Martin said Bushfire Relief Residential Scholarships would be offered at all Deakin campuses to ensure students can continue or commence their studies this year.
“As the bushfire crisis continues in many parts of Victoria and Australia, it is clear that the consequences of the terrible devastation will be with all of us for many years to come,” Professor Martin said.
“We are focused on supporting the educational aspirations of students whose studies might otherwise be interrupted as a consequence of the bushfires that continue to rage.
“The new Bushfire Relief Residential Scholarships are available now at all Deakin campuses, including for our Cloud students, so impacted students can plan for the academic year with confidence.”
Professor Martin said in addition to the accommodation scholarships, other student support services included financial assistance, replacement of lost study essentials, flexibility with deadlines, course counselling and personal support.
He said he urged students to contact Deakin’s Student Central staff to discuss how the university could help.
“Deakin will continue to reflect on the issues that the bushfires have raised to ensure that we continue to respond in ways that make a meaningful difference to those impacted both within and beyond the Deakin community.”
