Upgrade funding closing soon for public schools

LOCAL public schools have until February 29 to apply for funding to build or upgrade vital infrastructure.

Grants of at least $250,000 can be used for large scale capital works such as new classrooms, building refurbishments and playgrounds.

Government schools with a high number of students from low-socio economic backgrounds, First Nations students and those with disability will be prioritised.

Others who haven’t received significant capital funding in the last two years will also be high in the pecking order.

Corangamite federal member Libby Coker encouraged institutions to apply before the application deadline.

“As a former teacher, I understand both the challenges of working in education and just how important quality infrastructure is for our local schools,” she said.

“We know it plays a significant role in granting students access to quality education and ensures teachers can provide the best learning experiences possible for our young people.

“From upgrading art rooms and tech rooms to new outdoor equipment, this funding will deliver upgrades to government schools that need it most.”

Round 2 of the federal government’s Schools Upgrade Fund (SUF) will provide $215.8 million in funding and be targeted at public schools with the greatest need.

The government will work with state and territory education departments to distribute project funding.
