WORK has started on essential upgrades at the Port of Apollo Bay, with a focus on repairing the breakwater wall and replacing the sheet pile wall at the jetty’s end.

Colac Otway Shire mayor Marg White announced the $2.8 million project, emphasising its significance for Apollo Bay and the Great Ocean Road region.

“Council was determined to see the project delivered to remediate the Port’s infrastructure and ensure it continues to provide safe haven for the many port users, and remain an attraction for locals and tourists alike,” she said.

“It is pleasing to see the works commence and we appreciate the significant support from the state government to make this happen.

“Our staff are overseeing the project and users and visitors can expect some disruptions, but the port will remain open throughout the works.”

Despite some expected disruptions, the port will stay open throughout the project period, with the shire overseeing the work.

The Victorian government initiated the $2.8 million works to safeguard the harbour and improve safety.

Minister for Ports and Freight Melissa Horne outlined the project’s scope, which includes repairing more than 70m of the Lee Breakwater and constructing a new sheet pile wall to shield the harbor from rough sea conditions.

“Apollo Bay is one of the most recognisable spots along Victoria’s south-west coast and improving its safety will ensure the area remains a vibrant economic and tourist precinct,” Ms Horne said.

Additional enhancements include widening the jetty and installing public lighting, aiming for completion by spring 2024.

Last week, the Great Ocean Coast and Parks Authority also announced it was calling for expressions of interest to join a Community Reference Group (CRG) for the Apollo Bay Harbour Redevelopment.

The EOI for the new CRG follows the completion of an independent review of the Apollo Bay Harbour Development Plan 2020.

The authority will now appoint a head consultant to lead the next phase of planning and design, with the ideal appointee an industry expert that will bring experience in urban design, landscape architecture, and architectural services.

“”As we embark on the next phase of the Apollo Bay Harbour Redevelopment with all stakeholders and community our focus is clear; to transform the harbour into a thriving precinct for all,” authority chief executive officer Jodie Sizer said.

“We look forward to working collaboratively with the Apollo Bay Fishermen’s Co-Operative, Council, locals and the new Community Reference Group, to deliver an outstanding outcome that we can all be proud of.”

The EOI for the new CRG will open on March 26 online at haveyoursay.greatoceanroadauthority.vic.gov.au/AB-harbour
