FUEL retailers across Victoria would be required to report real-time prices under draft regulations now open for public consultation.

The proposal, released by the state government this week, invites Victorians to give feedback on the planned system via the Engage Victoria website before June 26.

Consumer Affairs Minister Nick Staikos said the plan would make it easier for motorists to find the cheapest fuel in their area.

“Making price reporting mandatory means motorists across the state will have access to reliable information to plan when and where they fill up the car,” he said.

The rules would apply to more than 1,500 service stations, with prices to feed directly into a new fuel finder feature on the Service Victoria app.

Government modelling suggests the system could save families hundreds of dollars a year by helping them avoid peak prices.

Government Services Minister Natalie Hutchins said the tool would expand the app’s growing list of services.

“The fuel finder feature on the Service Victoria app will give motorists access to real time fuel prices from service stations across the state,” she said.

While commercial fuel apps already exist, the state tool will include more providers and show prices without promoting individual retailers.

The draft regulations were informed by earlier industry consultation.
