FOR the 12th year running, Surfcoast Longboarders is hosting an all women’s event and fundraiser in honour of International Women’s Week.

On Saturday, March 5, the Wild Women on Water (WWOW) event will celebrate female longboarders with a day of competition and festivities at Point Impossible, the club’s home break.

This year the event will kick off at 7am with a Welcome to Country ceremony conducted by Wadawurrung woman Corrina Eccles.

President of Surfcoast Longboarders Penny Andrews said WWOW is a day for women to surf together and get connected into the longboarding community.

For 12 years Surfcoast Longboarders has been hosting their all-female WWOW event to coincide with International Women’s Week.

“We run the event in International Women’s Week to recognise women in the surf, what women bring to the surf culture, and to acknowledge that women’s surf culture is growing and changing,” Mrs Andrews said.

“The aim of the day is for all of the girls competing to have a really good time.

“And even though the heats do get judged, we have a team event which is judged on fun, so people dress up, wear groovy outfits, and its judged more on shenanigans and fun, so that’s a great one to participate in if they’ve never surfed in a competitive environment before.”

The event will include an Under 18 Junior division, an Open Women division and divisions for Over 40s, Over 50s and Over 60s.

Mrs Andrews said everyone is welcome to come and watch the day and bring a set up for the day, with a coffee van on site providing all competitors with a free coffee, while remembering to keep the beach clean and tidy.

Each year, funds raised at the WWOW, along with other fundraising events the club runs, are given to a cause.

In past years the event has been used to support the Mallacoota Surf Club following the area’s fires as well as local families facing financial challenges.
