Australian flags have been placed at the graves of fallen veterans at Winchelsea Cemetery in a quiet tribute ahead of Anzac Day.

The Winchelsea RSL led the initiative, placing flags at about 170 veterans’ graves across the cemetery.

Club secretary David Loone said the idea was inspired by a similar effort in Colac.

“This is the first time we’ve done it, and it makes us proud,” he said.

“It’ll be very nice for people to come past and see all the flags up on the hill.”

The flags will remain in place until Monday.

RSL member Maureen said the gesture was a simple show of respect.

“For us, it’s symbol of respect and remembrance to those who fought bravely for our country,” she said.
