MORE than 200 people came together to celebrate women in surfing at an inaugural event held in Lorne at the weekend.

The Great Ocean Road Women’s Surf Festival provided opportunities for surfers of all backgrounds and experiences to come together and celebrate their love for the ocean.

Amongst the 30 workshops held during the festival was a Q&A between Waterpeople Podcast host Lauren Hill and 10-time Bells Beach champion Gail Couper.

Gail spoke for an hour about the early days of surfing in Victoria and her life growing up in a small coastal town.

She also touched on her groundbreaking Bells Beach titles and the inspiration she gets from women today.

The event was held at Lorne on Gadubanud Country.

Participant Mia Holland said the event blew expectations out of the water.

“It’s been amazing seeing so many women and girls supporting each other. It will be one of the first of many, I hope.

“It was really interesting to hear Gail talk and learn about her life. She’s such a legend of surfing and it was amazing to listen to her talk.”

An inclusive surf competition was part of the event program.
