Woorrangalook Victorian Koori Surfing Titles to celebrate 25th anniversary
THE Woorrangalook Victorian Koori Surfing Titles are set to be back bigger and better than ever in 2023, as Surfing Victoria celebrate the 25th year of the event and the award-winning Victorian Indigenous Surfing Program.
Set to be held on February 10 and 11, the Koori Surfing Titles will give Indigenous surfers from across the state the chance to gather for two days of surfing, mentoring and learning about culture on Country.
Since its inception as an event 25 years ago, participation has increased from 20 participants to more than 100 participants with more people from across the state including those in remote communities enjoying surfing as a viable sporting option.
Surfing Victoria chief executive officer Adam Robertson said it would be incredibly special to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the event and its success as one of Surfing Victoria’s key pillars of their Indigenous program offering.
“The Woorrangalook Koori Surfing Titles is an incredible gathering of Indigenous communities from across the state and we can’t wait to celebrate the 25th year of the event and the Victorian Indigenous Surfing Program.
“The event showcases First Nations surfers from across Victoria, but it also is a chance for everyone to catch up and share stories from the past year.
“From its humble beginnings two decades ago, Surfing Victoria and the Surfing Victoria Indigenous Surfing Program are proud to host over 100 participants each year on Wadawurrung Country.”
The event will be accessible for surfers of all levels, from first time beginners to advanced competitors.
All participants during the event will go home with a prize, while the winner of the Open Men’s division will receive a wildcard entry into the 2023 Rip Curl Pro Trials at Bells Beach.
The event will again be drug and alcohol-free.
