Work progresses on cairns

September 3, 2020 BY

Contractors have begun work on Winchelsea's new cairns.

PREPARATION work for two new cairns honouring Winchelsea and district service personnel from World War II and other conflicts is underway.

A council contractor was on site preparing footings for the new monuments at Winchelsea’s Memorial Park in preparation for the cairns’ steel and glass manufacturing.

Surf Coast Shire council is working closely with Winchelsea RSL to deliver the project, which will complement a World War I cairn installed in 2015.

“This is an exciting step forward for a project which means a great deal to the Winchelsea community,” Cr James McIntyre said.

“The town and district have an extraordinary and proud record of service. Together these three distinctive memorials will create a dignified space for remembrance and reflection, fittingly at the heart of the town.”

Cr Heather Wellington thanked the RSL and community members for their support.

“The lists of service personnel are now complete, following a call-out to community for names to be included on the cairns and then a huge volume of dedicated research and fact checking by the RSL,” Cr Wellington said.

“This great collaboration will lead to such a meaningful result.”

Landscaping work including installation of irrigation and turf has also started in the park.
