Work starts on Armstrong Creek sports pavilion

THE first sports pavilion in Armstrong Creek is now under construction.

It is part of the East Precinct sporting reserve, located on Central Boulevard, which will support sports including netball, football, soccer and cricket.

The precinct will feature:

• A multi-purpose community sports pavilion
• Two ovals with hard wickets (one with sports lighting)
• Two flood-lit netball courts, and
• Cricket training nets with two hard wicket pitches.

Contractors have started earthworks on the sports ovals, and the new facilities are expected to open to the public early next year.

The multi-purpose pavilion will feature a social room, community meeting spaces and three sets of gender neutral change rooms. Construction is expected to be finished in December 2018.

The East Precinct sporting pavilion is funded by the City of Greater Geelong ($3.1 million) and the Victorian Government ($500,000), while the precinct’s sporting reserve is being delivered by Warralily.

The East Precinct will also include the region’s largest child and community centre next to the inclusive Armstrong Creek School, which opened this year.

“Armstrong Creek is an exciting growth area of our region and community infrastructure needs to match this growth,” Geelong mayor Bruce Harwood said.

“This will be the first of 10 new recreation reserves planned across the Armstrong Creek Growth Area.

“The Armstrong Creek community will benefit greatly, with the development of sporting clubs at the reserve to cater for their sporting and community needs. There has already been interest from the active community keen to start sporting activities and develop clubs at the reserve.

“The broader precinct includes Armstrong Creek School and the future Armstrong Creek Integrated Children’s and Community Centre.”

Warralily general manager of development Mark Whinfield said the new sporting precinct would provide exciting new infrastructure for the growing Armstrong Creek area.
