THE Surf Coast Shire has started construction of a new footpath on the west side of the Surf Coast Highway that will connecting Baines Crescent to Bristol Road.

The project will close a missing link in the shared path network, improving pedestrian and cyclist access between the Surf World precinct, Torquay town centre, and the foreshore.

The works will be delivered in three stages. Stage one, stretching from north of Saint Therese Church to the caravan park, began on May 19.

Construction of the remaining stages will follow, with the full project scheduled for completion by December.

“We’re excited to be improving access and connectivity in this busy part of Torquay,” Cr Rebecca Bourke said.

“This footpath will provide a safer, more direct route for locals and visitors alike.”

Some existing driveways along the route will be affected during construction.

The shire’s contractor will work closely with affected residents and businesses to minimise disruption.

The Victorian government, through Regional Development Victoria, contributed $100,000 through its Council Support Package, which is focused on delivering lasting economic, social, environmental, sporting and wellbeing benefits for regional and rural Victorians.

“We appreciate the support the Victorian government has shown with funding for this pathway.” Cr Bourke said.

“With their support we can continue to provide these safe connections for the community.”
