EROSION prevention works have officially started at Cosy Corner in Torquay to protect the timber seawall from significant wave attacks and damage.

On Monday this week, Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority (GORCAPA) staff begun installing giant rock bags in front of the 160-metre-long wall to provide short term protection to the aging infrastructure.

The works will involve craning the rock bags into place over the next two to three weeks, pending weather conditions, during low tide periods.

The rock bags will provide short term protection to the seawall.

The rock bags have been tested by GORCAPA to ensure they will not affect the marine environment, and have been environmentally planned for with the assistance of Parks Victoria and the Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation.

As a method of protecting the public, the neighbouring car park in front of the seawall at Cosy Corner will be closed until Friday, April 7.

All beachgoers are asked to please keep away from the area for the duration of the works.

The works are funded by the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action and has received Marine and Coast Act consent. The rock bags will provide temporary protection while GORCAPA undertakes wider adaption planning and community consultation.
