Works completed at two tourist spots in the south-west

July 9, 2020 BY

The visitor area at Maits Rest has been refurbished.

MORE than $6 million in works for the Port Campbell Pedestrian Bridge and refurbishment of Maits Rest rainforest boardwalk have been completed.
Port Campbell Pedestrian Bridge is now open. Spanning 60 metres across Campbells Creek, the bridge provides vital year-round access between Port Campbell and the coastal discovery walk in the Port Campbell National Park.
The bridge design and materials were chosen in harmony with the surrounding landscape and the historical swing bridge that once stood in its place.
The new bridge is the first project to be delivered as part of the state government’s $9.8 million investment in Stage One of the Shipwreck Coast Master Plan.
The master plan is predicted to deliver millions in annual additional spending in the area and create up to 3,800 Victorian jobs.
Works have also been completed on a major refurbishment of the Maits Rest visitor area that opened on July 4.
Maits Rest is an important regional tourism destination that draws more than 150,000 visitors a year.
Works at the site have replaced 800 metres of boardwalk and added raised viewing platforms protecting the forest understorey and providing animal corridors.
The Maits Rest upgrade follows works to improve visitor facilities at nearby Melba Gully, completing a $2.2 million investment in the 100,000-hectare national park.
“These projects and ongoing investments through the Shipwreck Coast Master Plan are supporting jobs, regional businesses and greater connection with the environment,” Minister for Energy, the Environment and Climate Change Lily D’Ambrosio said,
“The Port Campbell costal discovery walk is a truly memorable experience immersed in nature, while the raised boardwalk at Maits Rest is excellent for visitors, the environment and our native animals.”
Member for Western Victoria Gayle Tierney said the two projects would provide ongoing benefits for local communities and the environment in Victoria’s beautiful south west.
