A NEW WorkSafe Victoria campaign is calling on the public to treat workers with respect, as data reveals a rise in serious injuries linked to workplace aggression and violence.

The campaign, Don’t Cross the Line, aims to highlight the toll of verbal abuse, swearing, and threats experienced by frontline workers across a range of sectors.

Almost 1,000 Victorian workers lodged serious injury claims linked to work-related aggression in 2024, including 316 workers who suffered mental injuries. More than 100 victims were under the age of 25.

The incidents spanned industries including retail, health care, emergency services, education, transport, and social assistance.

Deputy Premier and minister for WorkSafe Ben Carroll said the campaign was about reminding people to pause and reflect before reacting in frustration.

“There is never a place for aggressive or violent behaviour and this campaign is asking Victorians a very simple thing – to treat workers with the respect they deserve,” he said.

“Next time you’re getting frustrated in a workplace, pause and ask yourself – am I crossing the line?”

The campaign features scenarios such as delays in transport or long queues, with the message that workers can face multiple hostile encounters in a single day.

WorkSafe executive director of health and safety Sam Jenkin said the issue was worsening.

“Every day, too many workers are reduced to tears, sent home from work early, or turn up to their shift with a knot in their stomach because of repeated encounters with aggressive or violent people – enough is enough,” he said.

Employers are required to have systems in place to prevent and respond to workplace aggression and violence. Workers with safety concerns can contact WorkSafe’s advisory service on 1800 136 089 or head to worksafe.vic.gov.au/dontcrosstheline.
