THE World Surfing Championship (WSL) will be launching a new competition in 2020.

The Challenger Series is designed to provide skilled surfers with an extra opportunity to qualify for the Championship Tour.

Challenger Series events will act as part of the overall Qualifying Series.

Speaking last week, WSL senior manager of tours and competition Travis Logie said the series would enable a wider range of people to be involved in elite surfing.

“This new level of event and competition will provide greater opportunity for elite qualification, visibility for the next generation of surfers, and a marketing platform for our regional partners.”

“The changes are also intended to allow a greater number of regional surfers to develop through the WSL Qualifying Tour system – with the update to this level, we will be able to answer the demand for increasing competitive opportunities.”

The 2020 series will begin in Piha, New Zealand in March.

There will also be an event held at Australia’s Phillip Island in November.
