YOUNG Aireys Inlet environmentalist Rayson Kobayashi Baggs has been named a Local Legend by the Surf Coast Shire Council for his passion, commitment and leadership in helping the planet.

The 11-year-old child of local surfers Belinda Baggs and Jarrah Lynch is fast emerging as an inspirational leader in the community for his efforts in preserving and cleaning the coasts’ beaches.

“We’re always at the beach, either on the sand or in the water,” Rayson said.

“It made me realise how much you need to protect it and nourish nature, as it is vital for these ecosystems to be healthy in order for it to look after us.”

Along with volunteering several weekends a month to Surfers For Climate and using his spare time to pick up plastic from beaches, bush and parks, he talks with friends about important environmental issues and his laments for people who mistreat the earth.

“Everyday I try to be conscious of my decisions and actions, try to use less waste, pick up rubbish when I find it,” he said.

“Some adults seem to look at the earth as a big garbage bin or a resource, but really we are connected and depend on nature to live… because there is no planet B for us.”

At the height of the Fight for the Bight campaign that was established in opposition to plans to drill for oil in the Great Australian Bight, Rayson opted to donate money from his eighth birthday to the cause.

“I was worried about an oil spill hurting the whales, dolphins, turtles and fish,” he said.

“I didn’t really need more toys, but I did need a clean beach and for the animals to be safe.

“I also ride my bike or walk to school every day to use less emissions from the car, and try not to ask for anything I don’t need.”

The grade 6 Aireys Inlet Primary School student is serving as the vice-school captain this year, but was modest about the latest recognition of his leadership.

“But hearing that I’m inspiring makes me feel happy to know that others are also caring about the planet,” he said.
