A PRIME riverside living in Geelong with a local developer announcing a new era for the site, which aims to create a fusion of historical legacy and modern vibrancy.

The site, formerly housing the Collins Woollen Mills, is the only property in the area directly interacting with the riverbank, and was bought by local builder, developer and Founder of Glengarry Developments, Wayne Jennings, back in 2008.

Mr Jennings, who has lived in Geelong most of his life, has championed his vision for this precinct ever since his purchase, and was a pivotal stakeholder in the broader West Fyans Structure Plan developed by the City of Greater Geelong, with this project expected to set the precedent for sympathetic riverside living.

Now this groundbreaking vision for the Barwon riverfront has taken a monumental step forward with planning approval for the landmark development at 510A LaTrobe Boulevard. This long-awaited decision promises to redefine riverside living in Geelong and marks a significant milestone for the local builder.

Mr Jennings said that securing this approval after years of design development has been a rewarding achievement.

“When I acquired this site, I knew it was a once in a lifetime opportunity to purchase a site with a rare connection to the riverbank.

“This vision started with Glengarry, and we’ve persevered to see it realised. From the project conception, we’ve envisioned a vibrant residential community that embraces the riverfront, much like the transformative developments seen along Melbourne’s waterways.”

Glengarry Developments has worked closely with award-winning architect Asher Greenwood from GKA Architects and engaged extensively with the city and local stakeholders for more than five years to finalise the design.

“It’s been a journey of countless meetings and refinements, but the result is a plan we can all be proud of,” Mr Jennings said.

“Over the years there’s been a keen interest in the site, especially among downsizers and business professionals looking to transition to riverside living.

“This project has been met with incredible enthusiasm from locals and the broader community.

“I’ve had conversations with people from Newtown and nearby areas who are excited about the opportunity to live here as this site is truly exceptional, a rarity in todays market.”

The development’s approval reinforces its value and potential, following the successful rezoning effort initiated by Mr Jennings and Glengarry Developments.

They reveal there has already been substantial interest in the site from potential purchasers, and their commitment has always been to complete the vision they started.

Mr Jennings said this was not just a business endeavour; it was a legacy.

The site was originally part of the historic Union Woollen Mills established by William Henry Collins in 1874, the site at 510A LaTrobe Boulevard holds a significant place in Newtown’s industrial heritage with the initial mill building, designed by architect H.R. Caselli was a testament to the growth of wool manufacturing in Geelong.

While the mill buildings once embodied the bustling activity of Collins Bros Pty Ltd, the land at 510A has since been cleared of structures while the adjacent properties continue to tell complementary stories of the area’s industrial vitality.

Notably, the nearby Albion Woollen Mills, with its 19th-century origins, and Victorian Italianate villa “Rosebank”, contribute to the rich historical tapestry of Newtown.
