Crushing on velvet
If you have as much of a crush on velvet as we do, you’ll be pleased to hear that it’s on trend at the moment.
Velvet is one of those fabrics that instantly takes a room to the next level, and it really is hard not to appreciate the beauty of velvet curtains. There’s just something about velvet that is almost regal – maybe it’s the way it reflects the light, or how this tactile fabric just begs to be stroked?
This luxurious fabric is far more versatile than you might think – it looks amazing in bright, casual colours and lends itself to a couch, dining chairs or a simple ottoman, or if you prefer a more formal look then classic colours can scream decadence and style. The key to making velvet work is simply not to overdo it.
With the power to transform a window in an instant as well as bringing eye catching glamour, velvet curtains can add a touch of luxury to a space, but the look doesn’t have to be over the top. Beautifully draped curtains will help frame your window, add a little texture and will also help keep your room warmer during the coming winter months.
On our most recent shoot, working with local stylist Julia Green of Greenhouse Interiors, we combined velvet furniture and accessories with our clients stunning sheer curtains that we had installed for them a few months earlier. This room is used daily by a family with three teenage daughters and what a serene space it would be to relax in. By adding in some colourful velvet and textured accessories, Julia took this already beautiful room to the next level.
We then played around with dressing the same window with blockout drapes in a rich ochre velvet. Julia worked her magic to style the space creating a completely different look, using only a few different accessories.
The simplest and most affordable way to bring velvet into your home is with a few fabulous accessories. Scatter cushions can be the perfect way to refresh the look of your lounge room and add a touch of this on-trend style to your home without investing in new furniture or curtains. Cushions are perfect for layering and mixing velvet with other fabrics such as linen, cotton and leather can create a modern, contemporary look that’s also cosy in this cooler weather.
So if you’re like us and are totally in love with velvet, just remember that restraint is required – invest in just one or two key pieces in your favourite colours that will add some ‘wow’ factor to your home.
