The population of Moriac in 2011 was 644 people and by the 2016 Census the population was 803, showing a population growth of 24.7% in the area during that time.

Moriac has become very popular with young families in recent years as they look to raise their family in a semi-rural environment away from the hustle and bustle of urban living but still close enough to the beach and Geelong.

The Hinterland Estate is evidence that this type of rural living is still highly sought after in Moriac with the acreage estate selling out in record time.

History records that the township evolved shortly after 1877 when the Geelong to Colac railway line was opened.

Moriac grew around the railway station and shortly after 1900 two large pastoral properties were subdivided into small farms around the station, causing a population influx with the first Moriac primary school opening around 1922.

CoreLogic data indicates that the predominant age group in Moriac is 0-9 years with households in Moriac being primarily couples with children and are likely to be repaying $1,800 – $2,399 per month on mortgage repayments, and in general, people in Moriac work in a professional occupation.

In 2011, 97% of the homes in Moriac were owner-occupied compared with 95% in 2016.
