Swap screens for survival skills these school holidays

School may be out, but for some children, the outdoors will be a classroom these school holidays as they ditch the screens to learn essential outdoor survival skills.

KIN Surf Coast, in partnership with Bush Rangers Survival, will be giving children the opportunity to learn essential bushcraft skills as part of their Child vs Wild school holiday program.

Kicking off on January 10, aimed at children aged 6-12, KIN director and local Sarah Bolus said: “The programs will give kids the opportunity to learn while having fun outdoors.”

 

“We’ll be covering a broad range of skills. Kids will put their hand to attempting friction fires, learn how to use flint and steel, make cordage from plant fibers, recognise and search for local bush foods, and create their own survival shelter.”

While the focus of the program is on survival skills, it is also about getting children outdoors.

“Our programs also offer children opportunities where they can climb trees, explore, imagine, take risks, and do things that many of them don’t get to experience any more,” Ms Bolus said.

Aside from the Child vs Wild program, KIN will also be offering a range of other outdoor holiday programs including back by popular demand, WildCraft – an adventure program inspired by the game Minecraft.

 

KIN is run by fully qualified staff with training and experience in forest school leadership, outdoor education, early years as well as primary and secondary teaching.

KIN also runs nature playgroups and wild play adventure kinder programs during the term.
