Young people of all ages reconnect with ‘Kids Go Bush’
Surfcoast Outdoor Adventure Kids, also known as SOAK, connects children together to experience adventure and nature each holidays at YMCA Anglesea Recreation Camp.
The YMCA Kids Go Bush team, based at YMCA Anglesea Recreation Camp, are looking forward to offering more ways to connect children to the outdoors and inspire adventure.
In addition to the child-led holiday time adventuring for primary school age, we are looking forward to offering opportunities for older youth and welcoming families to join the adventure during our playgroup programs.
YMCA Kids Go Bush promotes not only fun but also developmental skills in young people across ages from our tots group to primary school and beyond.
Our focus is to get children outdoors having a different adventure each day and may include a selection of cubby building, tree climbing, mud play, build your own zip line, nature craft, bush cooking, mountain bike riding, rogaining, giant swing, archery, climbing wall, plus loads more fun activities.
Themed activity days include SOAK Does Paddle and SOAK Does Skate, designed to allow more time on a single activity to increase skills and learn from our passionate instructors.
Our primary school-aged holiday day program ensures the children are challenged in a safe and controlled environment, with access to the activities and equipment used on school camps, and supported by passionate staff.
These holiday’s eligible parents/carers can receive Positive Start funding to attend camps, as part of the Victorian Government’s initiative to re-engage primary and secondary students to boost their emotional and physical health and wellbeing in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
This September, we are offering some themed activity days for youth ages 10 and up – SOAK Does Paddle, SOAK Does Rafts and Soak Does Ropes.
These days are designed to engage youth and allow more time on a single activity, including planning the activity specifics and choice of route, raft design or rope participation.
These sessions are still run by our YMCA Kids Go Bush staff who will ensure the timeframes and decisions are youth led and appropriate to the entire group.
Children will be immersed in a variety of activities, games and challenges around the theme, leading to increased skill development, ability and knowledge.
We are excited to offer these themed days to young people aged 10-15. It is especially important to continue connecting to the outdoors through adolescence.
It is known that pressure from school, peers and self is high for modern teens and by engaging young people to connect to the natural world, develop life skills and skills for active recreation, we enable resilience, lifelong learning, sound mental health strategies and sense of place.
In addition to our School Holiday Day Programs, we are running some family playgroup events for early years adventurers and siblings at our family connection events.
So if you would like to share some nature craft or bush cooking with your mini-adventurers, it’s a great way to be supported getting outside this spring.
