AFL Barwon announces changes to female footy structure
AFL BARWON has announced a reshuffle to its female football structure in 2023, aligning its female pathway with the male competitions moving forward.
Following a thorough review of the competition structure, Female junior age groups will revert to Under 10, Under 12, Under 14, Under 16 and Under 19 for 2023 and beyond.
AFL Barwon region general manager Edward Wilson said he was excited to announce the age group changes off the back of a stellar 2022 for the local female game.
“The change in age groups represents the exponential growth our region has experienced, both pre, during and post COVID effected seasons,” he said.
“This change provides greater opportunities for participation, development, and career longevity, to ensure our female footballers are provided with the best environment locally to excel and enjoy their football.”
Last season involved unprecedented numbers and support for women playing local football, including the Junior Round Robin at the Female Festival of Sport and Grand Final Day at St Joseph’s Herne Hill Reserve.
AFL Barwon’s female football co-ordinator Bree Beckley said she looked forward to replicating the league’s success in the upcoming season.
“I very much look forward to continuing working alongside clubs for the 2023 season to help and give more girls the opportunity to play football.
“I want to ensure girls and women have fun playing the great game of footy in our region.”
