Catching up with Torquay Boardriders charger Angela Ball

February 7, 2019 BY

RECENTLY I caught up with local surfing gun and big wave charger Ange Ball to discuss her path to being one of the premiere women’s surfers in the state.

Ange, a multiple time Victorian State Team member, national competitor and Torquay Boardriders Club member, has over the past few years risen to the status of one of the best female surfers Victoria has to offer.

You will find Angela most often out at Bells tearing it up when it is way overhead! Anyone who knows her, would say her smile is contagious, even grinning after she cops a big wipeout.

Anyway, here is some highlights of our chat.

So, Ange, when did you start surfing?
I started surfing when I was about two years old, just with my dad, my older brother and my sisters at Torquay Back Beach. However, I really got into it when I was about 11 years old.

Who are your biggest inspirations who have shaped who you are today?
My biggest inspirations include my mum and dad for honestly being the best. Stephanie Gilmore is another one, as she has been my favourite surfer since I can remember, as well as Bethany Hamilton. During my hip problems I saw how strong and hard life was for her (Bethany), and realised how lucky I was and how I still had so many opportunities ahead of me.

What’s your goals for this year?
This year, I’d really like to make some more heats. I just want to surf more competitions and hopefully make a few finals.

Best session?
I think my best session would definitely be at Bells, when it was big and solid. Getting a few bombs on the head and wiping out every now and again is always fun.

Favourite food?
Sushi

Favourite TV show or movie?
Harry Potter

Favourite thing to do when you’re not surfing?
With my spare time, I love hanging out with friends, which is definitely a priority for me.

What’s the plan for you once you finish school?
I want to travel! To all different surf spots, I know Bella Wilson and I have planned to travel together after school which would be awesome. I would love to do comps and travel with such a good friend like Bella.

Would you rather be completely invisible for one day or be able to fly for one day?
Fly for one day!
