Cats re-sign squad trio for 2025
GEELONG’S journey back to the AFLW finals in 2025 will involve three key returning players in Claudia Gunjaca, Rachel Kearns and Zali Friswell, after the three signed contract extensions.
Gunjaca will remain at Kardinia Park for another three seasons, while Kearns and Friswell both inked two-year deals to remain at the club until the end of 2026.
“We’re thrilled to see Claudia, Rachel and Zali extend their time with the Cats; they are all great teammates and valuable members of our playing squad on and off the field,” Geelong Cats assistant general manager Brett Johnson said.
“Claudia, Rachel and Zali are a part of our core group that have played together for the last few seasons.
“To be able to secure them along with others longer term is exciting, and we can’t wait to see that group continue to build on and play some great football in 2025 and beyond.”
Gunjaca joined the Cats as a mature-age selection from Geelong’s VFLW side ahead of the 2022 season, playing 39 games and becoming a key member of the backline.
Kearns joined Geelong as its first AFLW international signing ahead of 2022, and has appeared in 34 games for the Cats.
A County Mayo product from Ireland, Kearns enjoyed a career-best season in 2024, averaging 10 disposals, two rebound 50s and five-and-a-half intercepts a game.
Friswell has played 41 games across the past four seasons, averaging career highs in 2024 for disposals and tackles on the wing.
The Cats recently signed Australian volleyballer Caitie Tipping and also re-signed 2024 All-Australian forward Aishling Moloney.
