SURFCOAST Basketball Association (SBA) is seeking representative coaches to join its Chargers program for season 2023/24.

Vice president Adam Forde said the association is looking for coaches to lead teams ranging from Under 12s through to Under 20s.

Coaching applicants will need to commit to a weekly Friday night game (home and away) and two training sessions per week.

“We’re looking for experienced coaches that have been around the traps for a while and are eager to improve their coaching skills,” Forde said.

“We’ll be putting successful applicants through different training courses to get them skilled up, but an eagerness to coach at the rep level is the only key criteria we have.”

Forde has coached representative basketball at Under 14s, Under 16s and Under 18s over the years, with a touch of senior coaching experience.

He said there are countless benefits to becoming a representative coach.

“The biggest benefits to coaching that I’ve experienced have been watching kids continue to grow in the game of basketball and become better players against the best players in the state,” Forde said.

“It’s just really rewarding and as a coach you continue to learn as well.”

The Chargers cap teams at four teams per age group (two boys, two girls), meaning a maximum 20 head coaching roles will be available in 2023/24, with assistant coaching roles also to be on offer.

SBA’s Under 14s boys, Under 16s boys, Under 18s boys, and Under 16s girls had two teams each in 2022/23. Other age brackets had one team each this season.

SBA encourages its representative sides to compete in several large-scale tournaments throughout the season, namely the Victorian Country Championships, the McDonald’s Ballarat Junior Basketball Tournament, and the Bendigo Junior Classic.

The SBA is also seeking a new director of coaching.
