Chargers return from USA tour of a lifetime
A GROUP of Surfcoast Chargers players and their parents have returned from the trip of a lifetime in the USA over the Christmas break.
Twenty-one players, two coaches and 14 parents embarked on the journey on Boxing Day to compete against American high school basketball teams and enjoy some of the country’s biggest attractions in the two-week trip.
The group explored Los Angeles, Vancouver, Seattle and Portland, and experienced NBA and college basketball games, an NHL match and even a trip to Disneyland.
Bec Lewis, who is the club secretary and went on the trip, said that the trip was incredible and the entire group took plenty away from it.
“Watching our teams compete against USA high school teams with the same spirit and camaraderie as always was a highlight.
“It was also great to meet the teams and their families and enjoy their hospitality whilst exchanging basketball experiences.
“The kids formed new friendships and got to experience group travel.”
Lewis said Disneyland was another highlight enjoyed by the group.
The trip received plenty of positive feedback from the players, with Lewis explaining that it strengthened their bond and passion for playing with each other in the future.
“It really topped off a tremendous year for the SBA,” she said.
“We have had great success on and off the court and a trip like this is providing another opportunity for our community to have a unique and enjoyable experience.
“We are so proud of what we are growing, from Aussie Hoops through to Big V and everything in between, and this is just another great achievement to add to the list.”
Lewis said the club planned to make the trip a bi-annual tradition, and thanked trip organiser Mel Jackson and the support of the local community for their contributions.
“We can’t wait to offer this experience to more Chargers in the future.”
