AFL Victoria drops Community Championships
AFL Victoria recently announced that it will not be holding the Community Championships in 2020 while the tournament undergoes various changes.
AFL Victoria surveyed the clubs involved, and 70 per cent of respondents that they wished for the competition to be discontinued.
Interleague football will continue at the discretion of the clubs involved. AFL Victoria will continue to financially support these events.
They have dedicated the same funds to these games as they did to the Community Championship in 2020, with whatever funds may remain to go to supporting volunteers at community level.
However, the junior representative programs, including the Metropolitan Junior Championships and V/Line Cup, will continue as normal.
This will be in addition to the recently announced $18 million set to go into Victorian country football.
AFL Victoria will continue to consult stakeholders and clubs to determine if the Community Championships return at a later date and what its structure of will be if it does.
