OCEAN Grove and Geelong Amateur have set the tone in the BNL A grade competition, with Queencliff, Newcomb and Torquay at their heels.

Queenscliff coach Jane Searle said the third-placed Coutas had reflected on what they could work on following defeats to the Grubbers and Ammos.

“It was interesting really because we turned over quite a bit of ball, but we mainly did it in our defence end,” she said.

“For me, defence is a full court thing where everyone has to contribute.

“So we’ve really been working hard on a full court defence, not just relying on when it gets down to that defence end.”

Searle said it showed last weekend when the Coutas accounted for fifth-ranked Torquay 60-50.

Queencliff co-captain Kaitlin Gladman puts on a brave face after getting injured late in the game against Torquay.

“We picked up a bit of ball in the midcourt, but we’ve still got a lot of work to do in that regard.

“We’ve got a few different defensive philosophies to try out and work on and cement into our psyche so everyone knows what we’re doing at the right time.”

Queencliff play Barwon Heads away tomorrow (Saturday, June 7) at 1.50pm in Round 9.

Searle is hoping to get some minutes into star Laura Cayzer, who returned from a long-term calf injury to play half the game against the Tigers.

The Coutas were sweating on the fitness of co-captain Kaitlin Gladman this week after she was helped off court late in the game against Torquay with what looked like a knee injury.

The goal attack, who shot 21 goals, was named best on court.
