Cricket round-up: rain foils Modewarre
RAIN brought mixed fortunes over the weekend, with some teams in the BPCA and GCA playing while others were forced to call their games off.
Modewarre were particularly aggrieved by the weather. Their match against St Peters was the only one in GCA’s Division 2 1sts to have to cancel play.
This meant they only took three points from the match, despite having amassed an imposing total of 7/268 in the first week of two-day matches.
The draw means they are now three points off the top four with just two matches remaining.
However, next week they play against fourth-placed Highton, providing them with a chance to get back into a finals spot.
Overcast conditions only made things more difficult for a Torquay, already starting the day on 4/14. Marshall’s opening bowlers Jake Dubbeldam and Brad Greenwood bowled all but nine deliveries as Torquay crumbled for 38. Greenwood was particularly impressive, taking 5/6 in just 14 overs.
Marshall sent Torquay in to bat again to try and win outright, but Torquay dug in and only lost three wickets in the remaining 42 overs.
In Division 1 Leopold also struggled, as North Geelong dismissed them for 95 to win by 131 runs.
In the BPCA only Queenscliff and Ocean Grove were able to start their first week of two-dayers, with the rest of the sides set to play one-dayers next week.
Queenscliff batted and set an impressive total of 271, despite not managing to bat out all their overs. They were led by Tim Frankenburg who scored his second consecutive century.
Ocean Grove’s Paul Jubber helped keep the score below 300 taking 4/36. All his dismissals were aided by wicketkeeper Nathan Taylor, including two stumpings.
