Cricket round-up: Anglesea defeat Barwon Heads to take top spot
ANGLESEA’s nine-wicket win over Barwon Heads on Saturday allowed them to claim top-spot in the BPCA A1 Grade.
Going into the match the two sides were the only teams in the BCPA to have won their first two games.
Barwon Heads won the toss, but from there on Anglesea had all the joy.
Jacob Nolan and Ky Eskrigge were Anglesea’s lead bowlers, taking three and four wickets respectively.
Yet Anglesea’s bowlers helped build pressure, as Barwon Heads batted 34.2 overs for just 79.
Anglesea’s bowling attack has bowled their oppositions out in all three games this season, conceding a poultry total of just 262 runs while doing so.
Ocean Grove is now second on the ladder behind Anglesea, courtesy of a seven-wicket win over Portarlington.
They chased down Portarlington’s 122 in just 24.2 overs, with Lindon Giuffrida finishing unbeaten on 50.
Jan Juc had a similarly comfortable chase as they defeated Barrabool by nine-wickets.
Opener Ben Grinter’s brisk 79 meant Jan Juc reached their target with more than 10 overs remaining.
The game between Queenscliff and Collendina was washed out.
Queenscliff will likely feel the more aggrieved, as after 29.3 overs they had restricted Collendina to 4/83.
In Division 1 of the GCA, Leopold undoubtedly benefited from the rain.
Playing Lara they crumpled for just 97 as Daniel Hughes ran through their batting line-up, taking 8/35.
Lara then forged on to reach 1/74 of 26 overs only for the rain to come and wash away a near-certain victory.
Leopold also saw Shane Canton play his 250th game for the club in the fourths.
Canton marked the occasion by scoring 86 and taking 3/25 to lead his team to victory.
In GCA Division 2, Geelong City showed what a threat they would be in their first season in the division, as they defeated reigning champions Torquay by 66 runs.
