January 23, 2020 BY

Manifold Heights were left frustrated by Modewarre's steadfast batting display.

THERE were a series of close games in the BPCA on the weekend, with the competition for finals places remaining very open.

Jan Juc continued their recent form by defeating Barwon Heads to record their third consecutive win.

Barwon Heads finished their 40 overs 9/163.

Jan Juc managed to chase down the target with a single over to spare, largely thanks to Ben Grinter’s 53.

The five-wicket win means Jan Juc now move up to third and push Barwon Heads down to fourth.

Jan Juc is also now just three points from second-placed Ocean Grove after the latter lost to Queenscliff on the weekend.

Ocean Grove were bowled out for 134 as Michael Philp ripped through their top order, taking 4/22.

But an unbeaten 50 from Michael Thornton kept Ocean Grove in the contest.

Queenscliff’s top-order similarly fell cheaply. But a series of contributions lower down saw them take a two-wicket win with just four deliveries remaining.

Portarlington and Collendina faced off, with the pair both looking for their first win of the season..

Collendina’s Ben Ricardo made 80 to help his team to 9/188.

Portarlington set a good speed chasing down the total, but they lost wickets frequently and finished all out for 152. A key figure behind this was Sam Beasley, who took 6/42 to secure Collendina’s first win.

Elsewhere, Anglesea defeated Barrabool after a late scare.

Anglesea looked comfortable for most the game. Dale Kerr’s 4/14 helped see Barrabool bowled out for just 104.

After an early wicket Kerr and Ned Cooper linked together and quickly made progress towards Barrabool’s modest target.

But a sudden flurry of wickets then had Barrabool back in the competition.

Anglesea eventually secured a four-wicket win, maintaining their unbeaten run.

In Division 1 of the GCA Leopold secured their third win of the season, with Benjamin Horne’s 4/26 helping them to a 36-run win over St Josephs.

In Division 2 Modewarre’s narrow win over Manifold Heights helped them move to fourth on the table.

Modewarre’s chase of 223 was led by Jake Hooson who batted through the innings to finish unbeaten on 104.

Torquay were bowled out for 126 by Highton, consigning them to an 86-run loss.
